Days of the Dead Festival at the British Museum
27 October 2015
The British Museum should be your only destination this weekend as it celebrates the Day of the Dead. This four day festival starts this Friday 30th October and includes a Friday evening event, family activities and a study day on Monday. In Mexico, Day of the Dead is an annual celebration where families gather to remember their relatives and friends who passed away. This festival has been tracked to 3,000 years ago among Mexico’s pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures.
The Day of the Dead Late takes place on Friday 30 October 2015, 18.30–21.30 in the Great Court and galleries. There will be music, performances, displays and the museum will be elaborately decorated with art installations by Mexican artists such as Betsabeé Romer, who’s Day of the Dead alter consists of tissue paper skulls and metal skeletons hanging from the ceiling.
Mexican food and drink will be available throughout the evening, including street food, Desperados and tequila cocktails. Try a spicy chocolate & orange skull-shaped cookie from the Cookie Bar in the Great Court, for one of your many Halloween treats this weekend!
There will also be a Mexican menu in the Great Court Restaurant including dishes like ceviche tostadas, take a look for yourself here!
