This spring, travel back in time to celebrate a defining moment in British history with a nostalgic VE Day Afternoon Tea at the beautiful Cellarium Café & Terrace, nestled within the historic cloisters of Westminster Abbey.

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, the Cellarium is serving a specially curated afternoon tea inspired by the resilience and creativity of wartime Britain. Available until mid-June, this unique culinary experience reimagines classic 1940s flavours using ingredients once shaped by rationing and ingenuity on the home front.

Expect a menu filled with heartfelt nods to the past – from savoury homity pie to mock apricot jam, all served on delightfully mismatched vintage crockery for that authentic retro touch. Crafted by our talented pastry chefs, each element is designed to honour the spirit of the era while offering a memorable afternoon treat.

On the menu:

Savoury delights

  • Roast beef, English mustard & watercress on wholemeal National Loaf
  • Cheddar & Spitfire Ale chutney sandwich (v)
  • Cucumber & cream cheese sandwich (v)
  • Homity pie – a traditional potato, leek, onion & Cheddar tart (v)

Sweet treats

  • Battenberg cake (v)
  • Victoria sponge cake (v)
  • Carrot cake (v)
  • Shortbread biscuits (v)
  • Earl Grey sultana scones with Cornish clotted cream & mock apricot jam (v)

The tea includes unlimited tea and coffee, with the option to toast the occasion with a glass of Chapel Down Classic Brut (£11) – a crisp English sparkling wine with notes of red apple, peach, and a gentle bready finish.

Served daily from 12:00pm, afternoon tea is enjoyed in the Cellarium’s light-filled upper dining room, where diners can relax beneath a glass ceiling with stunning views of Westminster Abbey – a truly atmospheric setting for this commemorative occasion.
