The Cellarium Café & Terrace at Westminster Abbey is proud to present a special menu celebrating the rich and diverse culinary traditions of the Commonwealth.
Earlier this year, we invited members of the public to share a favourite dish from across the Commonwealth, alongside the personal memories, traditions and stories that made it special to them. We were delighted to receive entries from people with a wide range of experiences and connections, demonstrating how food can bring together cultures, communities and generations.
After careful consideration, three winning dishes were selected for their flavour, originality and storytelling. These dishes are now available to enjoy for a limited time as part of our Commonwealth Specials Menu.
More than simply recipes, these dishes tell stories of childhood memories, travel adventures and cherished moments shared with family and friends. Together, they offer visitors an opportunity to experience the flavours of the Commonwealth while discovering the personal connections that inspired them.
Deep-fried battered chicken in a sweet honey soy sauce, served with a seasonal salad.
Growing up as a Chinese Australian, Eric remembers Honey Chicken as the ultimate comfort food. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and balancing sweet and savoury flavours, it became a favourite dish throughout his childhood. For Eric, food has always been a way to connect with people from different backgrounds, and many friendships were formed while sharing this much-loved dish.
Crispy ale-battered British fish served with thick-cut chips and sea salt.
Inspired by traditional seaside fish and chips enjoyed while growing up, Cherry’s winning dish celebrates one of Britain’s most iconic meals. Familiar, comforting and timeless, it evokes memories of family outings by the coast and the simple pleasure of enjoying freshly cooked fish and chips beside the sea.
Crushed vegetable samosa with chickpeas, yoghurt, chutneys and spices.
Ian first discovered Samosa Chaat while travelling in India, where the vibrant flavours and bustling street food scene left a lasting impression. The dish became even more meaningful when it was the first meal he cooked for his partner. Combining memories of travel with a personal milestone, it perfectly captures how food can become part of our own life stories.
